“Right to the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health for persons affected by leprosy and their family members

17 June 2022

STATEMENT OF CPLP

Sr. Presidente,

The CPLP takes note with interest of the report presented, which highlights the issue of realizing the right to the highest attainable standard of health for people affected by Neglected Tropical Disease -NTDs-, including Hansen`s disease, which allows for a holistic understanding of the situation of those affected.

In addition to the reductionist nature of the current biomedicine design, the existing gaps in the different health systems and the lack of profitability of investment in favor of these diseases increase the negative impact on the implementation of the right to health of those affected. We also emphasize the importance given to the human suffering and mental health of patients that transcend science and the financial perspective.

Considering the high socio-economic and psychosocial costs of NTDs for countries, Madam Special Rapporteur, what do you suggest as measures to improve cooperation between countries with a severe endemic situation? Could you share good practices that have contributed to the participation of people affected by leprosy in health services? And how could research and innovation be better advanced to fight these NTDs?

The CPLP reaffirms the importance of quality primary health care for the elimination of discrimination against people affected by leprosy and their families, and takes the opportunity to highlight the humanity of the work carried out and reiterate its support for its mandate.

Muito obrigada Sr. Presidente.
