UPR 41 – South Africa
Statement by Portugal
Mr. President,
Portugal welcomes the High level delegation of South Africa and wishes it a successful review.
We welcome the adoption of the National Action Plan to Combat Racism and the measures taken to prevent and combat corruption, namely the appointment of a Commission of Inquiry and the approval of the National Anti-Corruption Strategy.
In the spirit of a constructive dialogue, Portugal recommends that South Africa:
- implement a social assistance benefit for all persons living in situation of extreme poverty, aiming to reduce inequalities and ensure the enjoyment of an adequate standard of living, and increase the child support grant, open to all children;
- ratifies the Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.
Thank you.
