UPR 41 – Philippines
Statement by Portugal
Chair,
Portugal welcomes the delegation of the Philippines.
We welcome the launch of the first-ever national-level UN joint programme on human rights and the convening of the first Philippine Human Rights Defenders National Assembly.
In the spirit of constructive dialogue, Portugal recommends that the Philippines:
- re-join the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court;
- create and empower an independent body to conduct impartial and transparent investigations to all extrajudicial killings and arbitrary detentions targeting suspected drug users;
- ensure workers’ rights to social protection and make efforts to eradicate poverty, with the goal of breaking the chain of human trafficking, especially of women domestic workers.
Portugal wishes to the Philippines a successful UPR review.
Thank you.
