UPR 41 – Indonesia

Statement by Portugal

Chairperson,

Portugal welcomes the delegation of Indonesia and wishes it a successful review.

Portugal welcomes the enactment of the Sexual Violence Crime Law and the adoption of a National Strategy for the Elimination of Violence against Children.

Portugal recommends that Indonesia:

- commute all death penalty sentences and publish annual data on death penalty convictions as a first step to the its full abolition;

- take further steps to support persons with mental health conditions and psychosocial disabilities to live independently in the community; pursue efforts to enforce the prohibition of shackling and forced seclusion as forms of punishment or discipline and review Law no. 18 so that no involuntary decision on institutionalization can be taken without judicial review;

- ensure the right to just, favourable and decent work for all persons, including for persons employed in palm oil plantations, namely by preventing and investigating violations of occupational safety and health norms, addressing inadequate housing facilities and unfair employment contracts, and respecting the right to form trade unions;

Thank you.
